I’m a late-diagnosed autistic adult and live with my (early-diagnosed) small human child, three feline children, and one dog child in the mid-Atlantic US. The human child and I are Canadian as well as US-American, and she was born and diagnosed with autism in Toronto. I, on the other hand, am from the US originally and immigrated to Canada some years ago, which probably wouldn’t have been allowed if I’d already been formally diagnosed when initially applying if we are being honest.
So things are nuanced and I’m not here to say that either country is great for disabled people — both come short in different ways (I’m looking at you, ABA industry in Ontario). But well… I’ve become Canadian now and nobody’s taking that away! *waves maple leaf*
Overall: I care about undoing patterns of generational trauma in autistic families. My child IS growing up with more inclusion and acceptance than I had, and that matters.
As for the careers-y stuff, I do IT because I like to think in systems, and I needed a paycheck but linguistics (my other Masters degree) wasn’t quite paying the bills. I don’t often see myself in reflected in the field, and even less so in social media where the buzz happens. Hence, this site.
